چکیده

We identify a sample of 74 high-redshift quasars (z> 3) with weak emission lines from the Fifth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and present infrared, optical, and radio observations of a subsample of four objects at z > 4. These weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) constitute a prominent tail of the Lyα+N V equivalent width distribution, and we compare them to quasars with more typical emission-line properties and to low-redshift AGNs with weak/absent emission lines, namely BL Lac objects. We find that WLQs exhibit hot (T ∼ 1000 K) thermal dust emission and have rest-frame 0.1–5 μm SEDs that are quite similar to those of normal quasars. The variability, polarization, and radio properties of WLQs are also different from those of BL Lacs, making continuum boosting by a relativistic jet an unlikely physical interpretation. The most probable scenario for WLQs involves broad-line region properties that are physically distinct from those of normal quasars. Subject headings: quasars : general – quasars : emission lines

A Sample of Quasars with Strong Nitrogen Emission Lines from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We report on 293 quasars with strong N iv] λ1486 or N iii] λ1750 emission lines (rest-frame equivalent width > 3 Å) at 1.7 < z < 4.0 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Fifth Data Release. These nitrogen-rich (N-rich) objects comprise ∼ 1.1% of the SDSS quasars. The comparison between the N-rich quasars and other quasars shows that the two quasar subsets share many common properti...

The Color Selection of Quasars from Redshifts 5 to 10: Cloning and Discovery

We present simulations of quasar colors, magnitudes, and numbers at redshifts 5 < z < 10 based on our discovery of ten new high-redshift quasars and the cloning of lower redshift Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars. The ten quasars have redshifts ranging from z = 4.7 to z = 5.3 and i-magnitudes of 20.21 to 20.94. The natural diversity of spectral features in the cloned sample allows more re...

Estimating the continuum of quasars using the articial neural networks

A lot of absorption lines are in the bluewards of Lyα emission line of quasar which is well-known as Lyαforest. Most of absorption lines in this forest belong to the Lyα absorption of the neutral hydrogen in the inter-galactic medium (IGM). For high redshift quasars and in the continuum with low and medium resolution, there are no many regions without absorption, so that, the quasar continuum i...

Double Lobed Radio Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We have combined a sample of 44 984 quasars, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 3, with the FIRST radio survey. Using a novel technique where the optical quasar position is matched to the complete radio environment within 450, we are able to characterize the radio morphological make-up of what is essentially an optically selected quasar sample, regardless of whether ...

Six More Quasars at Redshift 6 Discovered by the Canada-france High-z Quasar Survey

We present imaging and spectroscopic observations for six quasars at z ≥ 5.9 discovered by the CanadaFrance High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS). The CFHQS contains sub-surveys with a range of flux and area combinations to sample a wide range of quasar luminosities at z ∼ 6. The new quasars have luminosities 10 to 75 times lower than the most luminous SDSS quasars at this redshift. The least luminous q...
